WCCB board
member John Carlson of Lake Mills was honored by the Iowa DNR on
Saturday, November 10th, at the Keepers of the Land Volunteer Award
Banquet. The program was held at Polk County's Jester Park and
recognized volunteers who have helped to improve Iowa's natural
resources, have helped teach others about Iowa's environment, or have
promoted outdoor recreational opportunities in Iowa.
At
the event, John won the Outstanding Small Project Volunteer Award. Ben
Berka, Coordinator of the DNR's Shooting Sports Program, nominated him
for the award, which is given to an individual or a small group that
has excelled in their volunteer efforts. Later in the evening, much to
John's surprise, he was also honored with the Director's Award! This
award is given to the nominee that is the DNR Director's personal
choice for overall achievement and recognition.
Specifically, John was honored for
his four years of service in the establishment and oversight of the
National Archery in the Schools Program in Iowa, prior to the DNR
taking over the program late last year. Under John's dedication and
guidance, over 50 schools were recruited to the program, an estimated
$75,000 of archery equipment was acquired through donations and
fundraising, and over 2,500 kids were introduced to the sport of
archery. Through John's work, many of Iowa's youth now have a safe
introduction to shooting sports, and also gain an early awareness of
wildlife conservation.
In addition to these most recent honors, John has also been a member of
the Winnebago County Conservation Board since 2003, has been a past
president of the Iowa State Archery Association, has won numerous Iowa
State Archery titles, and was elected to the Iowa State Archery Hall of
Fame in 1996.
John
is shown in the photo above receiving his Director's Award. Also shown
is Randy Edwards, Assistant Chief of Law Enforcement, Iowa DNR; Merry
Rankin, Director, Keepers of the Land Volunteer Program; and Richard
Bowman, District Law Enforcement Supervisor, Iowa DNR.
The Winnebago County
Conservation Board meets at Thorpe Park on the second Monday of each
month at 8:00 A.M. These meetings are open to the public.

Man always kills the thing he
loves, and so we the pioneers have killed our wilderness. Some say we
had to. Be that as it may, I am glad I shall never be young without
wild country to be young in. Of what avail are forty freedoms without a
blank spot on the map?
